KL, Terengganu close in on Super League promotion

SHAH ALAM: Kuala Lumpur and Terengganu edged closer to promotion to the Malaysian Super League after claiming precious 2-1 away wins in the Premier League on Tuesday.

After Terengganu defeated relegation-threatened MISC-MIFA in the early kick off in Tanjung Malim, KL responded by beating Universiti Teknologi Mara in Shah Alam, thanks to a late penalty by league top scorer Guilherme De Paula.

KL and Terengganu have 44 points from 20 matches and both need just one more win from their remaining two games to confirm promotion to the top-flight.

Perak State Economic Development Corporation moved up to third on 40 points after ending the promotion hopes of Negri Sembilan, who slip to fourth with another two points in arrears, with a 3-1 win in Ipoh.

De Paula turned out to be KL's saviour after a sluggish opening saw the city side trail 1-0 at the break when Akanni Sunday Wasiu took advantage of chaos in the KL defence to slot in his 17th league goal in the 41st minute.

Brazilian striker De Paula headed KL level in the 74th minute before keeping his cool to convert an injury-time penalty to take his league tally to 24 goals, breaking the club record for most league goals in a season.

UiTM goalkeeper Soffuan Tawil was sent off when he brought down KL's Manaf Mamat in the box in conceding the penalty having earlier been booked for time-wasting.

Terengganu stayed on course for promotion thanks to goals by Kipre Tchetche and Issey Nakajima-Farran in the second half with Kpah Sean Sherman replying late on for MISC-MIFA, who are level on 10 points with bottom side Armed Forces.

Forces kept their hopes of staying afloat alive after holding out for a 1-1 draw against Johor Darul Ta'zim II in Pasir Gudang while Perlis remain precariously perched just two points above the drop zone after a 5-1 hammering by Sabah in Kota Kinabalu.
