Deputy team captain upbeat in match against Hong Kong, hopes for a fair game

HONG KONG: The national team deputy captain Shahrom Abdul Kalam is hoping the quality of refereeing in their 2019 Asia Cup qualifiers clash against Hong Kong on Tuesday will be better than their first encounter in Malacca last month.
The match at the Hang Jebat Stadium, which ended in a 1-1 draw, saw Australian referee Christopher Beath flashing red cards to both Aidil Zafuan Abd Razak and Rizal Ghazali, forcing both defenders to sit out on tomorrow’s match.
“I hope the refereeing will be better than that in Malacca. I believe the outcome of the match on that day could have been different if not for the issues with the referee,” said Shahrom.
“However, I was happy that we at least managed to salvage a point.”
Shahrom, who is also Perak’s captain, urged his teammates not to fear Hong Kong who are expected to field a team filled with naturalised players against Malaysia.
“We have prepared well for this match. All the players know how important it is for us to win.
“We are playing for the country and I am sure all the national team supporters want us to win. We can do it if we remain positive throughout the match.”
