Malaysia drawn with Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia in AFC U-23 Championship

CHANGZHOU, China: Malaysia have been drawn together with three Middle East teams in the group stage of next year's AFC Under-23 Championship in China.

In the draw ceremony in Changzhou on Tuesday, Ong Kim Swee's side were placed in Group C with 2013 champions Iraq, Jordan and 2014 finalists Saudi Arabia.

Malaysia will play the group stage in Changshu on Jan 8-27.

Kim Swee's side reached the tournament proper for the first time after topping Group H in the qualifiers in Bangkok in July.

“We are among the top 16 teams in AFC’s Under-23 category. I expected a tough group even before the draw was conducted.

“It will be a good experience for the team playing against the three Middle East sides. However, we will do our best to reach the next stage.

“I have always said that the gap between teams in under-age tournaments is not big compared to senior events, so I believe we have a chance to achieve something.

“However, Iraq, Jordan and Saudi Arabia will definitely have the advantage as they play each other regularly in the Middle East.

“But we can do something as we already know that they have similar styles of play,” said Kim Swee.
The former international said he plans to gather his trainees sometime next month for centralised training.

“Definitely, we will have friendly matches to prepare and I will finalise the training programme for the tournament next week.

“Of course, I am looking at arriving in China early for the tournament as the players will need time to adapt with the cold weather.

“It will be challenging not only against the three teams but also the weather,” Kim Swee added.

Group A comprise hosts China, Qatar, Uzbekistan and Oman, while defending champions Japan, North Korea, Thailand and Palestine make up Group B.

Last year's runners-up South Korea are in Group D with Australia, Syria and Vietnam.
