N. Korea, M'sia to play Asian Cup qualifying matches at neutral venue

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's two Asian Cup Group B football qualifying matches against North Korea will be held on neutral ground in November, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has decided.

The original fixture that was meant to be held in Pyongyang has thrice been postponed over regional security fears and due to a government ban on Malaysians travelling to North Korea.

However, the AFC did not say which country will host the matches.

North Korea's "home" game will take place on Nov 10, with the return match, which was earlier scheduled to be played in Shah Alam, to follow at the same venue three days later.

AFC general secretary Datuk Windsor John said the order of matches has been maintained as the previously-announced sequence to protect the sporting integrity of the competition.

"We are pleased that the two member associations, after much discussion, have been agreeable to this arrangement.

"Playing the games in this way, and in this order, helps us protect the sporting principles of the Asian Cup final qualifying round," Windsor said in a statement on Friday.
