Sime Darby wins FAM Cup for second time
PETALING JAYA: Sime Darby won the FAM Cup for a second time despite
being held 2-2 by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in the second leg of
the final at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Sunday.
The draw was enough for Sime Darby to triumph 3-2 on aggregate after winning the first leg 1-0 at Paroi on Oct 15 and add to their previous triumph in this tournament in 2010.
Nazrul Kamaruzaman and Tunku Noor Hidayat Tunku Ishak scored either side of the half-time break for Sime Darby after Hasrul Nurkholis Hasim had given UKM an early lead before Faidzol Fazreen Shamsudin set up a tense finale with an 89th-minute equaliser.
With both teams already assured of promotion to next year's Premier League, the only question to be resolved was who would lift the trophy in the country's third-tier competition.
UKM took only 17 minutes to wipe out Sime Darby's advantage from the first leg when Wan Afiq Wan Kasbi broke into the box from the left to draw goalkeeper Faridzuen Kamaruddin before passing to the unmarked Hasrul to slot into an empty goal.
But UKM's lead lasted just 13 minutes when Nazrul connected with a free-kick in a crowded penalty box, with ball hitting the post before settling in the back of the net.
A spectacular volley by Tunku Noor Hidayat from the edge of the penalty area 10 minutes into the second half to put Sime Darby 2-1 ahead and stretch their aggregate advantage to two goals.
Faidzol set up a nervous final few moments for Sime Darby after glancing a header into the back of the net a minute from time but the goal came too late for UKM.
