A blast from the past — 5 titanic Malaysia Cup finals

KUALA LUMPUR: As Kedah battle Johor Darul Ta’zim in the Malaysia Cup final at Shah Alam Stadium tomorrow, Timesport recalls five memorable Malaysia Cup finals of the past years.

1927 - SELANGOR 8 SINGAPORE 1
A record margin of victory and scoreline which Selangor would match again in 1968 against Penang but the main feature of this Malaya Cup final was the six goals scored by British expatriate J. E. King, a feat unmatched in Cup finals. After B de Souza had cancelled Foong Un Sun's early lead for Singapore at the Selangor Club padang, King scored his double hat-trick inside half-an-hour. King would later go on to become the FA of Malaya's first post-World War II president in 1947 and revive the competition the following year.
1933 - SINGAPORE 8 SELANGOR 2
Singapore exacted vengeance for the 1927 humiliation but it was not the 10 goals - a record for a final - that drew attention but the fate of hapless Selangor goalkeeper E. C. Cherrington. The British employee of Robinson's had been in goal for the 1927 final as well - but for Singapore - and has the dubious distinction of conceding eight goals twice in finals for different teams. The final itself was competitive for the first 10 minutes only when Selangor led 2-1 before collapsing as Chia Keng Hock bagged a hat-trick for hosts Singapore at the Anson Road Stadium.
1978 - SELANGOR 4 SINGAPORE 2
A tactical masterstroke by coach M. Chandran to have Mokhtar Dahari play in midfield saw Selangor overturn 0-2 deficit after 35 minutes to run out 4-2 winners by scoring three times in the last 15 minutes. After conceding twice in the space of three minutes, Chandran replaced young goalkeeper Rashid Hassan with the experienced R. Arumugam and the fightback began a minute later when Ramli Junit halved the deficit. Soh Chin Aun equalised with 14 minutes remaining and late goals by John Engkatesu and Ramli ensured the majority of the 30,000 crowd at the Merdeka Stadium went home celebrating an astounding win.
1983 - PAHANG 3 SELANGOR 2
T. Pathmanathan scored the winner in extra-time and then made a late goal line clearance from a Mokhtar Dahari attempt to ensure Pahang won the Malaysia Cup for the first time. Hamidon Abdullah gave Pahang, making their first final appearance, the lead at the Merdeka Stadium but Khan Hung Meng equalised soon after as the final went to extra-time where the real drama unfolded. Two goals in as many minutes by Zainal Abidin Hassan and T. Pathmanathan, the latter with a 20-metre drive, had Pahang in the ascendancy until substitute Mokhtar pulled one back to set up a nervy finale, ending with Singaporean Pathmanathan making the clearance from Mokhtar's header after goalkeeper Sanusi Daud had been beaten.
2012 - KELANTAN 3 ARMED FORCES 2
Indra Putra Mahayuddin's extra-time winner clinched a pulsating 3-2 win over a game Armed Forces at the Shah Alam Stadium to complete a treble of trophies for Kelantan. Having won the Super League and FA Cup, Kelantan were expected to roll over Premier League winners Forces but got more than they bargained for. Norshahrul Idlan Talaha put Kelantan ahead just before half-time. Soon after the break Forces equalised through Rezal Zambery Yahya only for Norshahrul to regain the lead for Kelantan a minute later. Marlon Alex James brought Forces level with a header but Indra settled Kelantan's nerves with the lobbed winner in extra-time.
