More needs to be done for futsal
KUALA
LUMPUR: Malaysian futsal is on the rise despite the absence of a
national league and other obstacles in the way of the sport's
development.
After finishing runners-up to Thailand at the AFF Championship in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday to follow their silver medal at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games, the national team can now claim to have made significant progress.
This is despite the fact that coach Chiew Chun Yong had a limited pool of players to choose from after the National Futsal League went on a hiatus.
But ahead of next year's Asian Championship for which Malaysia have qualified, Chun Yong is hoping the FA of Malaysia (FAM) can lend him a helping hand by reviving the local league.
"We have a lot of improvement to make before the AFC tournament next year," said Chun Yong after watching his team edged 4-3 by Thailand in extra-time.
"The match was so close for us to win. We were missing something in the game and that is individual quality and also composure. We did not want to be defensive and the strategy almost worked."
The defeat to Thailand came after Malaysia led 2-0 in the first half and 3-1 early in the second before the defending champions fought back to force extra-time and claim their 13th title.
Malaysia's performance drew a ringing endorsement from Thailand coach Jose Mendez.
"Malaysia had an incredible tournament. They showed that they have improved a lot and that they did a very good job.
“They showed it is not about luck they have reached this far. It was all about preparation. And they will do well in the future,” he said
